Ana, as mentioned, I mark the subtitle file as a Japanese language subtitle. As that will be the default subtitle language that will play first on my MPC. So don't be lazy and click on subtitle track and enable the only subtitle track that says Eng sub but marked on mkv as Japanese.
It is the reason why the subtitle may not be loading on your MPC since the file is tagged as Japanese sub.
