SONGS OF TOKYO showcases Japanese music to the rest of the world. This episode of the program features two up-and-coming bands in the Japanese “city pop” scene, a genre that’s been making waves in recent years. It started in the 1970s, incorporating sophisticated urban sounds, and grew into a big movement. Ame no Parade, a three-piece band from Kagoshima Prefecture, creates music that can be identified as a modern twist on city pop. The heartfelt lyrics crafted by vocalist Fukunaga draw empathy from young listeners in Japan. Their music, a fusion of various genres, has been garnering attention in Asia and the rest of the world. Ryokuoushoku Shakai was formed by a group of high school classmates and a childhood friend in 2012 in Aichi Prefecture. Their effeminate lyrics with delicate piano notes, accented by rugged guitar and bass accompaniments make an exquisite combination. The band made their break last year with their theme song for a drama, “sabotage.” “Shout Baby,” released this year has been becoming a hit. Some international fans raved about how they could sense the influence of city pop in their music. When hosts Murakami Shingo and Horan Chiaki ask them about common happenings among groups with both male and female members, the two bands share hilarious stories that bring down the house. Don’t miss out on fresh music from two bands that are on the verge of making their big breaks this year! ![](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/697013075215122462/714142363458469938/FumeiCaps_SONGS_OF_TOKYO_-_11_2020.05.25_NHK_World_1080i_H264_98513DF6.ts_thumbs.png)
