As is well-known, the classic 17 Dragon Ball movies were originally animated in open matte even though they were intended to be shown in widescreen in theatres. Indeed, most people (myself included) prefer to watch them that way, nevertheless, it is always nice to have them available in fullscreen as well.
No reencoding was performed on any of the videos.
As a result, some of them are interlaced (namely the ones taken from Funimation’s DVDs) and so will have to be deinterlaced during playback; some players do it automatically while others require this option to be manually enabled.
Also, some others come from PAL DVDs, meaning that they run at a faster speed than the native film rate, an effect which needs to be taken into account in order to properly sync the audio. In this regard, one could change either the video or the audio; in the end, I chose to stretch the video length (by a factor of 1001/960).
The sources used were as follows:
This contains the original Japanese version only.
The audio was sourced from Toei Animation’s Blu-ray releases (24-bit uncompressed stereo at 48 kHz sample frequency), synched to the respective videos and then losslessly converted to FLAC.
Team Mirolo’s sync was used for DBZ movies 1-13 at 480i (Funimation singles) and DBZ movies 7-11 at 576p (AB Vidéo); for the latter, they downsampled the audio to a 16-bit depth (a difference which should be imperceptible to human ears) and kept only one of the channels (which were identical anyway, as only the last two of the 17 movies have an actual stereo mix).
Subtitles were adapted from Pendekar’s, which ultimately come from Funimation DVD’s, noted for their excellent translations. Formatting was kept as simple as possible.

I need screenshots before i decide to download it.

Ah, an age old debate. While it is true that TOEI always intended to show the movies in theaters, thus 16/9, they also intended for them to eventually be on TV, which was 4:3 at the time. Thus the full screen version of the films has a lot of merits. Thank you.

Genuinely a great torrent. If you want Funimation Dubs synced to the French DVDs for a future release hit me up. I can’t upload my raw rips to Drive for some reason since they keep getting blocked lol. I also have a method to pitch correct the 25 fps converted Toei audio if yo want my audio tracks for that. Again really solid stuff here!

The irony is that 16:9 (1.77) is not a cinema ratio and it started as a TV ratio while 4:3 (1.33) is the original ratio used for silent films and near identical that the academy ratio (1.37), the widescreen typical ratios for cinema are 1.85 and 2.4 (actually 2.39, sometimes 2.35 but they are practically identical) also sometimes, but less common nowadays, other ratios are used (example 2.7). Also is true that 16:9 and 1.85 are very close and most people are incapable of notice if they are show at the other ratio.
Gnosis
Do the Dragon Ball movies have the dub??
DmonHiro
Gnosis, read the description: no, they don’t.

I wonder which Movie 07 Announcement he’s referring to and which source exactly?
I have all of these movies already , but I didn’t like the idea of removing the English dubs audio tracks .
May extreme fans of the show enjoy that completely .

Thanks for the amazing torrent. Hopefully one day we get a high quality correct coloured release of all the movies in 4:3.
I’ve never seen the movie 7 announcement before however, where is it from and what is its source?
Johnster
@nouryoku
The movie 7 announcement is shown at the end of movie 6 both in the Dragon Box and in the Blu-ray (though sadly not in the Amazon streams AFAIK) in a 1.85:1 AR. I would venture to say it was also shown in Japanese movie theaters. According to the description, it made its way into the Funi single in 4:3.

leo2leo

@leo2leo
It is mentioned pretty explicitly which sources were used and that the video was kept untouched.

@Johnster, si en los DVD Singles de Funimation está el avance de la película 7 en 4:3
MuffinSlayer69
This is a great release for anyone who wants the movies in 4:3! I downloaded both the Funimation and Madman versions of Movie 13 and I agree that the Madman version is slightly better. Did Madman do all the movies and is Movie 13 the only one where Madman is better than Funimation?
