What sort of problems remain in this updated release? Is it minor stuff like typos, or is it more serious like duplicated/missing pages?

Mostly typographical errors. I didn’t notice duplicated pages and there’s no obviously missing content, though it’s hard to tell since it’s been reorganized into 35 volumes and some extras have been swapped out compared to the VIZ release.

Thank u Danke! Wow after skimming to some of the volumes, it’s just the VIZ translation but more consistent with names and attack names. Really hoping for an entire retranslation altogether, oh well.

So excluding those typographical issues, is this the definitive edition of Shaman King suitable for a first-time reader?

Any plan on uploading the other spin-off? or the continuation; the Super Star?

The definitive version is not this one. This still has the ridiculous Viz censorship. Go with the scans for this one.

LMAO they even went out of their way to censor volumes 33-35 while they were at it. Cancerous release.

Could you elaborate a bit? Deciding whether to go with scans or this official release, since danke is saying there’s still lots of problems… As spoiler free as possible.

Deranged genuinely racist leftists from Viz media decided that one of the main characters who is black is not allowed to have big lips, back in the early to mid 2000s. So the Viz people redrew the character in every panel with no lips. They even changed his name from Chocolove to Joco. The spineless cowards from Kodansha USA kept the censored version, instead of releasing an uncensored genuine release of the series. The original manga had 32 volumes. After that, the author came back to complete the series years later, but viz only ever released the original 32 volumes.

What’s even worse is that, they(Kodansha USA) doubled down and went back to the new volumes 33-35 and censored Chocolove in there as well.

Ah. Forgot to mention. Although I didn’t read the manga, I did watch the anime more than a decade ago. So, I do know the Chocolove character.
It’s unfortunate they changed things… But, after I checked the scans quality, I think I’ll still get this release. For its high res at least.
And now, I’m a bit worried about the anime remake…

Marijuana leafs, Lyserg’s butt and tobacco sign are restored from being censored in previous official release. Ponchi’s (tanuki) balls and Morphine’s name are still censored. Interesting, singer Bob’s lips are not touched in earlier volumes (when he is shown on posters), but edited out in volume 19 (when we actually see him in person).
Middle volumes need editor’s work: there are 3 ways of spelling ‘Gandhara" = Gandhara, Gandara, Gandala. Tecolote becomes Peyote in the last volumes, and I think names of some X-Laws members are messed up from time to time (Cebin - Kevin, etc). It comes from previous release, where name changing from volume to volume was pretty common.
Translation could be better (I’d prefer complete retranslation but I understand it’s too much work), still no Chibi Maruko-chan joke.
Also cool “God End” chapters’ title (original letter format reminds of ‘Godfather’ movies) are lost, too. Chapter 18’s cover is not edited, which is odd (it’s a hard one to do I guess) as it clearly shows that “Happy Place” is actually “Best Place”.
Some colour spreads are black&white, and here I thought it’ll include all colour pages. But maybe japanese version is also like that.
Oh, and furyoku is ‘mana’ again. Why.
